This is the control unit for cars with the matching Bosch electronic distributor (transistorized ignition). Hall effect "star" and coil pickup inside distributor send signal to control unit which uses it to trigger the ignition coil. Used on USA e21 320i 1980-1983, some e30 318i and a number of European models including some e28, e24, and e23. Made in Germany (not China).
