This is a new, modern siliconized rubber top for the airhead tool box. Same heavy weight as OEM. The dealer sells theirs for $84-- probably why you rarely see them in circulation. The BMW parts fiche says "52 53 1 240 500 COVER (from 08/79)", but you can see it fits great on my 1975 R90S. Protect that valuable owners manual from turning to mush, and the tool kit from rusting. You should see the contents of a covered box vs an open one after several decades, really does protect everything inside....
