My grandfather told me that back in the day automobiles didn't have heaters, so a "lap robe" was wrapped around your legs and lap in the car to keep warm. It is a carryover from the horse and buggy days when carriage builders became car manufacturers. This hefty lap robe weighing 6 lbs will certainly keep someone warm.
